My online interview with the lead singer of Shark Infested Daughters - Chris Thoresen!!
BSK-You down to start? I have Tidebringer in my ear and have some questions!
Chris -Shoot!
BSK- Alright let's get on it! Altcity Calgary invites Chris from Shark Infested Daughters for an interview after they killed it at Dickens with Every Hour Kills , All Else Fails and Archon Prophesy this past Saturday!! .. Thanks for having a chat with me !!
You know I have been a fan of yours for some time now and you guys just keep getting better in my eyes! .. The band is getting tighter and the sound is getting more solid since time I first met you all.. And I love it! .. But how did you all meet and get this great sound together?
Chris- That's an interesting question. We all met through various channels and through the scene. I guess it originated when Dan Mccormick (Guitarist) left an ex endevour in 2010. I was living with Dustin Wolfe (Bassist) at the time and we were playing around with recordings and decided to ask Dan and Evan Bootle (Ex-Bassist) to try and start something. From there it was 9 grueling months of jamming without a drummer until Dustin left SID to pursue other musical avenues. I stumbled upon Yannick Mathieu (Drummer) at a restaurant we worked at, and pretty much forced him to be our drummer. After the departure of Dustin we found Oliver Carter-Wells (Guitarist) through mutual friends to fill the second guitar position, and continued to write and rehearse. At that point in time I was dating Erika Leah (Synth) and she would come lay down some synth here and there for fun, until we ultimately asked her to join SID. Our sound has changed wildly since our debut EP in 2012, since (through painful trial and error) we've finally found our niche. We wanted to challenge ourselves more. In 2014 we met Producers Rob Kukla and Sacha Laskow, who worked on the single "Attack on Trost" and we decided this was where we needed to be. Heavy music with challenging instrumentals, and vocals that invoke a feeling. Our mission statement since we formed was: To write music with substance.
I should probably mention we parted ways with Evan Bootle late 2014. And Dustin Wolfe rejoined as our bassist
BSK- Well you fulfilled your mission! . It is always hard to lose members but it is always for the greater good in most cases when you are working hard! .. What would be your standpoint on the way venues and shows are run in Calgary and the difference it can be changing members and connections?
Chris- Venues and shows in Calgary are hit and miss. We need a new all ages venue. I think since the New Black shut down its been harder and harder to get kids interested in supporting local bands, or even giving them the opportunity to play shows. We've always been pretty DIY with shows and we rarely work with promoters. The show is a direct reflection of how hard you work for it. Calgary has some great venues to play, that are only a phone call away to book. It seems a growing trend is lazy bands who won't take matters into their own hands. Go out and print posters to your show. Put them up, hand them out, do some leg work. Don't think for a second just because you're booked on a Saturday the venue will fill itself.
BSK- I Wholeheartedly agree! . I couldn't count how many times I have had to deal with that even as a promoter it needs to be a group deal with everyone's full attention.
Chris- Member changes is always tough. To find someone willing to dedicate themselves to learning your material without any prior context or writing influence is tough. After Bootle's departure we had a couple of people come and go until we asked Dustin to fill in for our tour. We gave him 3 weeks notice and he absolutely blew us away on tour. I don't think we'll be looking back any time soon.
BSK- Knowing that we will have more venues is the future , We will have all we need.. For venues but promoters will be needed , Not all promoters ask for anything wink emoticon ..... You know as well as I do you cannot trust everyone and that brings me to my last questions .. first off .. Tell us about this last Saturday!!!
Chris- Saturday was the Every Hour Kills CD release party featuring: Every Hour Kills, All Else Fails, The Archon Prophecy and SID.
We were beyond excited for this show. I met Sacha in 2014 when they asked me to do a guest spot on their single "Chosen". We absolutely love the stuff EHK puts out and since we spend alot of time with Sacha working on the new SID stuff, it was only natural that we combine forces.
BSK- I had a killer time at the show And I know everyone else did too!! .. But you you know I have one last question for ya right?
Chris- Awesome man! I'm glad you came to support.Lay it on me
BSK- Always if I can!
BSK- What would you do in a zombie apocalypse??
Chris- Depends what kind of zombies I guess. I would obviously follow the zombie survival guide and get myself situated if we're talking slow decrepit dead dudes trying to eat brains. If the zombies can run I'd shoot myself in the face as soon as possible.
BSK- Not a bad response .. I Think you would be fine though!
Thanks for chatting with me!!
Chris- Thanks again man!

Throwback Thursday - Dead Venues
This is a tough subject for many people invested in the Calgary music and arts industry .. The dead Venue .. Although when we look back at the places we loved for live music we may or may not have heavy hearts but probably fond memories!
The Back Alley,
Never really supported local music and should have fucked off a long time ago.
The New Black Centre for Arts and Music.
A wonderful place that nobody over 18 wanted to go to and was run down and suffocated by poor promoters.. well one in particular.
Shooters Bar and Grill.
I used to love the place even though it fell hard due to idiocy in ownership after the original owners sold it to the wrong people and over time it became something it should never have become.
The Area.
The community centre that should have been more than it was .. Although being a great place to be it was just not advertised enough or capable of bringing in revenue to keep it open.
The Distillery 1, 2
We all loved The many styles of music that The D brought to us over and over and it will never truly die . Distortion carries the D name on and I highly doubt the D will ever die!
And For one that will suck for many .. Republik is shutting it's doors for good as well ..They have hosted tons of local and international shows over the years and it is sad to see them go! there is more info here on that sad subject.
The places we love and want to hold onto are important to our industry so get out and support before they end up the way of these places!
Cheers! -BSK

Back from Hiatus!!
I am Back from hiatus!!
I have had not much to say for a while and have been busy but I am back in full force .. There are many things to say now and not much of it is great because I have seen a decline in the music and arts industry while I was Away but now I have noticed a change here and there for the positive and had to come back to writing about it!
The local boys ALKATINE are playing with THE TREWS and AltCitY interviewee Matt Blais! This coming Friday at Flames Central!!
We have finally new blood back in C town with Straight to Jetpacks , And I adore their Blind Beggar video link here .
CowPuncher and Puttin on the foil are some amazing motherfuckers from Calgary and have been standpoints in this industry and they are playing with Greystone Gardens this Thursday at Distortion ( the new version on the best minds in venue management and creation Here's to a few!!!)
I know that the stampede is a strange week for local shows but you should head out to these shows! I might see you there !
I gotta get back into my groove and find some help but AlTCiTY in back in motion!!!

Interview with the beautiful Belly dancer / Burlesque dancer RICA SHAE!!
My interview with my friend and the girl who will stare at me with the eyes of a serial killer the wonderful Rica Shea
AltCity as our Super Hero/Villain personalities;
As reported by Cisko Kid .. The sidekick of Rica shae!
Rica -LMAO
Omg. Are you going to wear thongs?
BSK-I will wear my thongs but not a thong lol
Rica -Well that's just no fun.
BSK- We can play pretend and have fun with it .. pretend that I am wearing a black
with burgundy thong That has Your logo in an uproarious Place on my body lmao
Rica -LOL that sounds like lots of fun
BSK-So what is you super hero name Rica Shea ? oops I think I may have fucked that up
Rica-Uhhh...
I just always went with Rica Shae.
I'm boring like that.
BSK-I know how boring you are not! You summoned my to be your sidekick with a stare and a couple types on a keyboard ..
you have massive mind manipulation powers how did you get them?
Rica-I was born by it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a woman,
by then to me it was only blinding.
BSK-Did you sense as a child that you would become the belly dancing force that you are today? The force that I follow?
Rica-LMAO!
Nope. But I knew from even then that I wasn't going to live a less than ordinary life.
BSK-Who as a superhero would you find as our biggest foe?
Rica-That's a really good one.
BSK-From your childhood knowing you knew you had something to achieve?
Rica -Biggest foe would be big corporations
Not a huge fan of corruption and greed.
And yes I knew I would achieve many things.
I just didn't think I'd be broke doing it. Lol
BSK-You and me both!
with your magic dancing that takes over the minds of others what would you like to hear from people?
That they were mesmerized. That they thought the movements were fluid.
(Magic dancing? LOL)
BSK-I thought that was one of your powers because it worked on me .. you have me wearing spandex!
Latex is too expensive
Rica-I couldn't convince you to get into a lacey pair, though.
BSK-I'm going to have to work on that.
We'll See lmao
Rica-Thong or boycut?
BSK-What is boycut?
Rica-Like booty shorts.
BSK-Naw I would rather the halfthong lol
Rica-Ok. Burgundy lacey half thong it is.
BSK-K can we get back to the interview? Btw yeah I am down for that! haha
LOL!
Rica-Sorry
Last question .. My favourite question .. But seeing as we are super heroes / Villains ..
What would we do in a zombie apocalypse ??
Ooooooo
Rica- Save the people we want to keep
BSK-Like who?
Rica-People who are not assholes, greedy or corrupt.
People who actually tried to make a difference
Round up supplies. Start from scratch.
BSK-Agreed! .. I will be at your side at the end! Because I am loyal to my leader! ..
Cheers Rica Shea For being awesome and rolling with this interview!
Rica-No worries! That was fun!
BSK- I can be fun sometimes lol .. I had a kickass time chatting with you!
Rica-LOL! Woooo hoooo

Hey ya'll !! sorry it has been soo long but I am back and still kicking, have been quite busy with home life as I am sure most of you have too! Interview with Trev Kill of Negative Earth !!!
Trev Kill and I had a chat and here it is!
Trev -Disco. I await the questions.
BSK-First question, Just for the readers who may or may not know your band or your music can you tell us how you started and what was your influence?
Trev- I started playing music in my teens. After I quit as the drummer for a rap core band when I was 21, I began playing guitar again in various projects. Once I realized that my vision was derailed by writing within a band, I started working on my own creations. My good friend/producer Myron Wegner offered to produce my solo album. I moved to Calgary at the age of 26 and started to learn the whole writing/producing process from a professional sound engineer/producer. He dedicated a great deal of time for me and made sure to compete it in its highest quality.
Once the songs were written and tracked, I chose a name for the project, built the website and social media underground. When it was ready to surface, I began putting a band together and started to book live shows.
My influences have changed over the years, but the bands that made an impact on me while writing my debut album Antithesis, are as follows. Tool, Meshuggah, Stabbing Westward, NIN, Korn, Opeth and American Head Charge.
BSK-Your influences come out strong in your music and with your own touch it seems to bring back sounds we have not heard in a while! .. being a possible influence on people looking to be involved in the same industry, what would you say to those who would like to start something of their own?
Trev- I strongly suggest networking. Always networking. If you can produce your own music and maintain a professional sound quality, you have a great start. But it is always important to have another person you trust to assist with producing your sound. You need that fresh set of ears to tell you something doesn't work or that part can be better or stronger.
Listen and flood your mind with bands that resonate with you. Whether you will write in the same genre or not. You always need influence and inspiration. And embrace your influences. Because when you are trying to explain your sound to someone who inquires about your art, it will be a direct way to guide them into taking a listen. Basically just that and to not give up. Without a band backing you up, it sometimes can drain you of your motivation. You need to stay dedicated and discipline yourself to complete it.
BSK- How long did it take to record the last time because I heard the quality and it was amazing!
Trev- How long did the whole album take?
BSK- yeah, that and the writing process? It sounds like it took a while!
Trev- The album was started and completed in 5 years. Including mixing, mastering, artwork and pressing. That being said, the songs weren't written. There were just a couple fragments for Gloomy Sunday and Slither. I spent most of my time learning. I was introduced to new software and new (proper) ways to track your ideas. Haha.
Once I would have a main idea I would mix it down and take it to Myron's studio to tear it apart, polish and alter. We weren't in a rush, and we had fun and created a stronger bond.
BSK- That is awesome! .. You have one hell of a show coming up and I will just let you tell the readers about it
Trev- Indeed we do. We are honored to have secured an opening slot for the legendary Green Jellÿ. They are on tour with Vancouver band Nim Vind. Both great acts and pretty cool guys. The show takes place on April 14th 2015 live @ the Republik. Doors at 7pm. It's going to be insane playing the same show together and then get to take in the wild performances after we finish.
To keep up on news about the show people can find us on Facebook or go directly to our website

BSK- My final question .. The one people want hear .. What would you do in a zombie apocalypse ?
Trev- If they are old school zombies - Lock and load.
New bath salt super zombies - Bang a lethal dose of heroin and return to my home planet.
BSK- The fun questions
Trev - Haha love those ones
BSK-I think we are on the same level here .. all but the heroin part lol .. Do you have anything else to say to th readers?
Trev- I think that's it, man. I would rather leave people hungry for more than stuff them with seconds.
Thank you for doing this!
BSK- No problem man! .! Cheers!

Throwback Thursday - InForLife
InForLife Is my throwback this Thursday!
I once knew these guys well when I started out in the industry, They once played a show for a website launch party I had for a previous project and they were just great! The story they had for the name and dynamic of the band was awesome! I really hope they are still playing because In for life was their mantra blood brothers and best friends was key to their music and their future in music.
I hope they come back and start playing shows again!
They made it onto CJ92 and was given great praise!
Check out their song Blue here!

Interview with Alternative model Kari Ursulescu!
Interview with the alternative, very beautiful Kari Ursulescu!
BSK-Ok so I have been facinated with your work for some time .. what got you into modelling?
Kari-Thank you!
It was actually kind of a fluke. A friend of mine was a photographer that was wanting to work on his portfolio. So we decided to try a few pin up shoots together. ..which went fairly well. Some time after that, a photographer (whose work I'd been following) contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in shooting...so I agreed! And thst opened up my eyes to a different world! One shoot lead to another...
BSK-As an "alternative" model with tattoos what has been your experience with the social media you are used to?
Kari-Well it's definately been interesting to say the least.
Facebook is a very strange place! I've definitely had very positive, encouraging feed back from friends, family and strangers. Facebook is great for networking and meeting new people, which has been pretty interesting In the best of ways.
But, I've also had a few negative experiences ...which I don't take too seriously. some people are way to upright and like to press the "report"button any chance they can get lol.
I've used Model mayhem as well which another fantastic place to meet like minded people. I get more of a reaction for the lack of clothing I tend to (not) wear than about being tattooed.
BSK-You have what I call the great alternative look , in most of your pictures you encompass the full range of your industry. When did you get your first attoo?
Kari-Thank you very much
I was 14 when I got my first tattoo...not alot of thought went into it lol. It was a small heart with roses.how original? Lol
I've been hooked since and have spent the last 8.5 years tattooing my body and turning it into my own canvas.
BSK.. I was also 14 when I got my first tattoo .. how was it for you? mine sucked lol
Kari -I remember that it was not nearly as bad as I anticipated it to be! I must like pain or something because I truly look forward to my next sessions!
BSK-What is the plan for your future in modelling?
Kari-I'm meeting with a photographer who I've worked with a few times now, in the next few weeks to discuss possible shoots for magazine submissions. He is a published photographer and has tons of his work in books, tattoo and fetish magazines etc . Hopefully something can come of that and I'll have the chance to show off some of this ink!

BSK-What is your favorite outfit for a shoot?
Kari-I prefer anything with a pinup touch. I've always loved the 40s/50 Era but with a more modern edge to it. I also prefer anything minimal, I've never been a fan of clothing lol and I like to show off as much ink as I can
BSK-Well no one can argue with that .. Ink on hot girls is key in my mind .. My final question that everyone likes is , what would you do if there was a zombie apocalypse ??
Kari-That's key in my mind as well!
If there was a zombie apocalypse I think I'd probably be a screwed to be honest. ..unless my days of watching Walking Dead pays off and I surprise myself with some epic moves . My roommate also has a bow and arrow and a bunch of guns...maybe I'll be ok after all lol.
BSK-LOL yeah I would probably go down like a rock in that situation haha .. Thanks for chattin with me!
Kari-I most likely would too damn it!!.thank you!!
BSK-It is my honor!

Throwback Thursday - Paris Envy
Paris Envy is one of the first bands I went to see years ago ..
Alongside numerous other bands that were trying to claw their way to the top back then Paris Envy was one of the bands That I believe was just truly doing it for fun at the time. They have a very laid back , sexy, rock and roll/indie sound that pushes some borderlines between Alternative and mainstream sound.
I know that they are still playing but this throwback was mostly geared to when I first met them about 4 years ago at Shooters bar and grill well before the place was sadly sold and renamed . I digress ,
Metaphorically One of those comfortable bands that you can hang out, listen too and eat tapas all the while headbanging and trying not to get your hair in the fondue while they play on stage.. Well that was my experience anyway .
You can check out their tunes on Soundcloud here
I can't wait to see them live again, It has been a very long time in my mind!
Although some songs are in french I really do not care lol I may not understand the words but you always get the feeling.
Cheers! -BSK

Torches to Triggers - A long time coming review
Torches to Triggers- long time coming review.
I have been rocking their super comfortable hoody and listening to their fucking awesome tunes for almost a month now and going over their album over and over , Have been to their live performance and I was blown away but I never thought I would say this but I am still speechless about how to properly describe them.
Every song is different on the album and I comment them for that 100% I cannot say for the life of me that there is a favorite of mine at all .. Modern day Monsters Is one of the best albums I have come across in a long time! Heavy hitting and perfectly timed with .... well Like I said I cannot get into detail they are the whole package you will just have to check them out for yourself and get your mind blown off with some killer modern punk / Thrash / hardcore punk/ borderline metal / Scream thrash/Hard rock/ whatever you wanna call it .. I just call it great!
Here is a video from them! En-Fucking-Joy!
Cheers! BSK
